CHENNAI: Chennaiites will realise their dream to travel in the long-awaited 7.4-kilometre underground stretch of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) from Thirumangalam to Nehru Park on Sunday when it will be inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Eddapadi K Palaniswami and Union Minister for Urban Development Venkaiah Naidu.
The CMRL, which has a patronage of 15,000 passengers per day in the elevated stretch from Koyambedu to St Thomas Mount and Chennai Airport to Little Mount, hopes to increase the patronage (45,000) with the opening of the underground stretch.
“The entire 22 km Corridor 1 or Green Line stretch will be put into operation by the end of this year and, then, the remaining 14.5 km Blue Line or Corridor 2 from Washermenpet to Little Mount will be opened,” said VK Singh, Chief General Manager, Underground Construction. Singh said the stretch from Nehru Park to Chennai Central will open at the end of 2017.

Interestingly, the frequencies of trains will be more or less the same while the maximum fare could be in the range of `60 from Nehru Park to Chennai Airport, said CMRL sources.
The 3 km underground stretch from Shenoy Nagar to Nehru Park will be a single line. Officials said that for a couple of months there won’t be mobile connectivity for passengers in the underground stretch. However, the CMRL will be using Tetra Bandwidth for train operation and communication.
Similarly, the CMRL will provide Wi-Fi services. Plans are also on to have multi-modal integration. “We are planning to have a dedicated parking space for taxi operators and buses,” said RN Dwivedi, Director (Projects), CMRL.
